In the year of grace 1308 Isabelle of France marries Edward II of England, becoming his Queen Consort. She soon discovers, however, that the king is not the man of her dreams but rather an unstable, erratic individual who prefers digging ditches and thatching roofs to running the country, coupled with a dangerous obsession for greedy and ambitious male favorites who do not like sharing the king's favors. Isolated and powerless in the English Court, Isabelle struggles to protect herself and her children as she slowly gains friends and allies. But how can she, a woman, prevent her adopted country from descending into the chaos of war between the barons and the king? And what is the meaning of the oubliette that haunts her dreams?
Newly revised and filled with meticulously researched detail, The Rogue Queen recounts the incredible true story of one woman who refused to accept society's limited role for her as it brings to vivid life the people and events of fourteenth century England.
"Spirited and absorbing...very richly atmospheric and tensely human--a very strong work, highly recommended." --Mary O'Donnell, Historical Novels Review

Although I can always appreciate a strong female protagonist, this one does too many unbelievable things for the time period. Like patting a unfamiliar destrier on the nose...There are many historical inaccuracies. I realize this is fiction, but generally a good author tries to stick with known facts as they weave their story.Product details

Excellent book. Great reading
I liked this author's lean, clear style and found her version of events absorbing and plausible. I appreciate the risks this author took in deviating from standard histories of this figure. History is written by the victors, right? How many of those have been women, again? Kudos to this author for giving Isabelle a fresh look.
It is hard for me to believe that a princess raised in a convent would know, or ever use the "F" word. Expressions used in the book were sounds of today. The story line is excellent, but the graphic language took away belief in the story.
Beautifully written. A perfect blend of mystery suspense and political intrigue. The ending was a total surprise. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
This was badly written, and the dialogue was 21st century American, (including swear words and expressions like 'I'm done...." which were not used in the 14th century). The Americanisation of the language was the worst part, but almost as bad was the characterisation at best, the characters were cardboard cutouts. The dialogue was unconvincing to say the least. A really disappointing book.
The writing seemed to slightly change in the middle of the book - like she had written the first half and got back to it years later. It did hold my interest but became less realistic as time went on. Language used was too modern.
I've read several books about this main character and I felt the author did a great job bringing out a more human and humane Isabelle than many authors choose to portray. Historically accurate for the most part, and well worded, no annoying lapses in grammar or dialogue. Worth the time.
